Description
The S.S. Badger leaving port in Ludington, Michigan at sunset ...
The S.S. Badger is the largest car ferry ever built for service on the Great Lakes. She is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Badger is the only coal-powered passenger ship still in regular service in the U.S. She sails late May through early October between Ludington, Michigan and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. To comply with EPA guidelines, the owners of the S.S. Badger are currently evaluating changing over from coal power to cleaner natural gas. However, due to the cost and complexity of making this switch, the EPA deadline of December, 2012 doesn't allow enough time. There is a "Save Our Ship" mission to gain an extension and keep the S.S. Badger sailing on Lake Michigan.
my personal observation: the smoke from the coal powered engines is very polluting and can be seen for miles and miles after she leaves port. I want her to be saved and hopefully she'll get an extension of time, but she definitely needs to be more earth friendly.
