i thought they were tears! thank you for sharing about it. when did that damage happen? II world war? Have been reading the Diary of Saint Faustina and wonder if she had relation to this image?
Patricia Januszkiewicz replied:
Sarah, the damage to the icons face occurred in about the year 1430. This icon has been associated with Poland for over 600 years. The history before the 600 years is not that clear .... I'm sure this icon was very important to St. Faustina, considering this image is the Patron of Poland, but St. Faustina is associated more with the image of the Divine Mercy ... Thank you for your interest and questions ... patricia

fascinating perspective - colors and textures rough, evocative of difficult emotions. moving portrayal.
Patricia Januszkiewicz replied:
Thank you so very much Sarah! You have good insight into this icon .. Our Lady of Czestochowa is a very moving, sorrowful image ... (but offering much hope) ... The two marks on her face are slashes from a sword trying to destroy the icon ... Looking forward to your upcoming contest entitled Blessed Mary Rose Mystica ... again, thank you ..... patricia
