Description
This statue of a Confederate Soldier stands watch at Johnson's
Island Confederate Cemetery - Ohio ...
In the fall of 1861, Johnson's Island became the site of a
Civil War Prisoner of War Depot. The first POWs arrived
on April 10, 1862. They had been captured at battlefields
such as Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. The prison was
closed in September, 1865. Altogether, more than 9000
prisoners were confined on Johnson's Island. The Confederate
cemetery holds the remains of more than 200 men who were
imprisoned on the island.
There were 26 Confederate generals and future generals
imprisoned on the island.
